WINE AND GRAPES
|
Our vineyards are on the hillsides outside Kondakeika. The majority produce the Moschato variety which we use not only to make the traditional sweet wine for which Samos is famous, but also to make a dry white wine & a retsina. We also cultivate three other varieties of grapes : Sirah, Cabernet & Fokiano.
From 15 August – 15 September we harvest the grapes by hand & select only the best for our wines which are made in the traditional manner using family recipes.
From July – November several varieties of eating grapes ripen in our vineyards including Sultanina, Cardinal & Roziki.

OLIVES AND OLIVE OIL
We have about 550 trees in our olive groves some of which are over 300 years old. It is the stony soil & the richness of the local herbs and aromatic plants which give our olive oil its exceptional flavour. To ensure the best quality (extra-pure), after they have been hand-picked & selected, our olives are taken immediately to the oil-press.
Fifty percent of our trees produce the Thromba variety. This is a local olive ideal for both eating and making a golden-coloured full-flavoured olive oil. Depending on the weather conditions in October to December, these trees produce a type of olive found only on Samos called Hamada. Requiring no preparation, these black wrinkly olives are highly sought after.
Our other trees are Koroneika and they are used to produce a superior olive oil which has an interesting peppery taste and very low acidity.
We sell many types of eating olives such as : Thromba, Kalamata, Cretan Manaki, Amfisis, Karadates ( large black) and an Italian variety (large green).

HONEY
The many beautiful flowers, herbs and trees on our farmstead proved an excellent source of food for bees so as of 2013 we have been producing flower and pine honeys.
An array of freshly picked fruit & vegetables is always available. Many home-made products are also prettily packaged such as dried herbs & fruits, various marmalades & preserves, fruit-juices & fruit-based liquors.
